EPILOGUE
T Subba Row (1856-‘90), as is well known and lamented too, lived for a very short span of life. His (theosophical) literary career can be said to have started on Sept. 14, 1881 (referring to his first article on “Twelve Signs” to The Theosophist, November); and ended sometime in 1888 (the last reported article “Occultism in Southern India” being ‘a summary of a discussion at Adyar Library, on 1st December 1888). In a short period of about 7 years, he…

Taraka Raja Yoga -4
There is a considered opinion that the quintessence of TRY is embedded in SRI RAMA HRIDAYAM boxed in the first canto of Adyatma Ramayanam. Here Sri Rama interferes to give instruction direct to Hanuman who was being taught the transcendental nature by Sita. The instruction runs to 9 sloka-s (44-52). The gist of the verses is thus:
I shall teach you the true nature of Atma - Anatma and Paramatma[Logos, Individual soul, Pure…

2Linga sarira, astral body Pranamaya kosa
3.Kama Rupa, seat of animal

TARAKA RAJA YOGA -2
HPB correlates this in her statement:
“The Taraka Raja Yogis recognize only three Upadhis, in which Atma may work. These three states are: Jagrat(Waking), Swapna(Dreaming), Sushupti(Causal). Corresponding to Sthula Upadhi, Sukshms Upadhi and Karana Upadhi. In the transcendental state of Samadhi body with its Linga Sarira (the vehicle of Life-principle) is left out of consideration, and is the synthesis of…

Joe Fulton said… I am aware of T. Subba Row's work, and have a special fascination in the dispute with HPB over the 7 principles.
Also interesting is the appropriation of his work by Alice Bailey and others, especially regarding the 7 Rays.
Subba Row also had a rather mischievous, and I would almost go as far as to say cruel side. In his Esoteric writings he had a piece on fortune tellers, specifically the piece on Nadigrathams (I hope I didn't butcher the spellings). The way that he messed with the fortune teller's mind was akin to someone playing mind games with a small child. But that is just my observation.
In addition I was introduced to an idea, given by a member here who is of another tradition speculating that much of what Subba Row did after his bout with Blavatsky was designed to deliberately sabotage any work that HPB was doing. It is well known that Subba Row thought HPB was giving out secrets indiscriminately and part of the mythology is that had a bearing on his subsequent illness and death.

Joe Fulton said… I am sorry but I do not see, and am not aware of the series that you are referring to. Subba Row is a fascinating and controversial figure within the Adyar Theosophical tradition. In discussions with other "Theosophical scholars" (an oxymoron of sorts...like jumbo shrimp or military intelligence) Subba Row's appears as a somewhat malefic character hell-bent on punishing HPB for revealing secrets to a non-HIndu world.
All-in-all, an interesting character, from just about any angle.

I gladly am appreciative that you
allowed us to unite..

M K Ramadoss said… I recall there is a new librarian for the Olcott library. Looks like unless someone personally visits and talks to the top elected officials, especially the International President, nothing is going to happen. I hope the rare archival material is well protected from the hot and humid Adyar weather.

Capt. Anand Kumar said… Welcome Dr. Ramanujachary. if you recall earlier this year we communicated regarding digitizing of Adyar Library. We hope you find our community of the curious enjoyable. We look forward to your sharing of ideas here.

Deb said… Welcome! I'm sure you will find much of interest here, and have many ideas to share! BTW, I had an acquaintance (a former colleague) who was from your region of India. Alas I cannot remember exactly where he was from, but I enjoyed working with him very much. We had many interesting discussions about spirituality, economics, politics, etc.! :-)
