Howdy James;  I did not want have too much back and forth between us in the discussion area when we were making exchanges back and forth.  In 35 years of being connected with Theosophy I have never heard what you are talking about.  But I completely believe you.  People make all sorts of claims.  Many are purely delusional I believe.  We know each one of us are connected directly to higher planes, and in some mysterious sense the Teacher is within.  But the need for a teacher, I totally get that. I have been involved with Sports all my life and no gets anywhere without a coach.  What I am getting at is probably not too far from what you are thinking too.  Simply put meditation is not some technique or formula for spiritual advancement, like practicing your scales on the piano.  I have always loved the term, Line of life's meditation.  Having to do with where a life is trending, where the mind gravitates.  Meditation in a sense, is a truing of one's direction.   Eventually it isn't something we sit down to do but rather becomes an abiding state of mind.  I am trying to say, albeit gently, lets not trivialize the subject that is so deep and pretend to know more about it than we really do.
