How to sell that idea (of frugality)? Well, maybe it's time for our leaders to get honest with us and themselves. That would certainly be a change compared to current practice. People are not stupid. If you explain to them what's really…

Thanks Martin. I think frugality is the keyword here. How to sell that idea without involving spirituality, is the challenge. I do not blame the politicians since I consider they are as much a victim as us of wrong paradigms that we ourselves have…

In stead of buying gold (which you can't eat!), people might do better to buy land collectively, for farming purposes. Grains, vegetables, soy, are all important items to grow. Forget about livestock for meat consumption - that's too…

Thank you Anand. Thinkers like Ervin Laszlo and James Lovelock have warned us for the impending collapse of our systems. I wrote about Laszlo in my recipes for global change. Cooperation, community, crowd funding and frugality are keywords…

Several thinkers since 1970's warned about the impending crisis due to our over-dependence on the cheap oil as the primary source of energy. We have not listened. Now the doom is upon us. As India and China compete to maintain their growth…

The (endless) growth paradigm, being a key tenet of capitalistic economy, will only accelerate the demise of our current system. No more resources to plunder, how will people react? Small wonder that governments avoid to speak about this coming…

This  group will focus on the writings of David Korten and Yes! magazine, devoted to raise awareness of the necessity and possibility of turning from Empire based thinking to Earth community orientation. I would like to see members studying David's works, and the magazine, in order to have structured, meaningful discussions. We will analyze and discuss the stories we are told and learn to recognize the lies embedded in these. We will also need to develop a new story that will inspire us to…See More

Culture wars: three perspectives on our world today

Posted on October 25, 2011 at 3:24am 2 Comments

This essay discusses the segmentation of the world, more particularly the Western world, into three cultural groups: Moderns, Traditionals and Cultural Creatives. There is a fierce polarity to be found here. Can Cultural Creatives bridge the gap that exists between Moderns and Traditionals?

This essay is a kind of informal sociological analysis. It is a sequel to my analysis of the…

Threefold gunas in psychology: how the ancients had it right

Posted on August 28, 2011 at 4:08am 8 Comments

Recently I discovered how the ancient concept of the gunas (sattva, rajas, tamas or balance/harmony, activity, inertia) can be applied to psychological processes. My work on the self-help introduction involved study of material that immensely helped me to integrate these concepts into the decision making process.

Attached you will find a study on the gunas, seen here as qualities of mind, expressed…

Beyond Reductionism (7)

Weiss, part five.

Open systems

Weiss mentions here his use of escape clauses as "to all intents

and purposes", "relatively bounded", "relatively constant", "essential" in relation to the issue of the non-existence of wholly autonomous, tightly bounded, systems of any order of magnitude and complexity.…

Hierarchy: a biological necessity

To stress the need for viewing living organisms as hierarchically

ordered systems, ponder the following facts. The average cell in the human body

consists of about eighty per cent of water and for the rest contains about 10^5

macromolecules…

Martin, I am attracted (which, for me, differs from agreement) to what you expressed regarding this group.

I don't know what my spiritual orientation is. Though I sense some will be attracted to what I express, and others, repelled. And I see that is as it should be.

Perhaps this will express my spiritual orientation: I request an invitation to your group, and yet am unattached to receiving one.

Thank you for receiving my expression. :)

Hi Martin,

Darren's the name ;) I've just got my Permaculture design certificate, and about to embark on my diploma course over the next few years.

The Shires Permaculture site was originally designed to store the learning material for each week, along with videos and photos. I've set it up for the group, as I'm a techy geek who's very much into Google.

Regarding the PDF version of "DIY handbook..." I do have a copy. It's over 7MB so can't attach it here... Can you send me an email and I'll reply as an attachment? (entropea at gmail dot com).

Peace,

Darren

Martin :)

re: Hesychasm, i enjoy the 2nd & 3rd meanings of the term:

  1. "the practice of inner prayer, aiming at union with God on a level beyond images, concepts and language", a sense in which the term is found in Evagrius Ponticus (345-399),Maximus the Confessor (c. 580-662), and Symeon the New Theologian (949-1022);
  2. "the quest for such union through the Jesus Prayer", the earliest reference to which is in Diadochos of Photiki (c. 450);

i am particularly taken with the story told in 'the Way of a Pilgrim', a Russian traveller searching for the meaning of 'pray without ceasing'.

as a meditation practice, i've been trying a personal variation of the rosary but may need to change it up.

Thank you so much, Martin and fellow Theosophists, for accepting my request. There's lots of great stuff to read and take in here, so I'll probably be a quiet participant for awhile--subject to change at a moment's notice. ;-)
