finding old discussions

I thought there was an old discussion where members introduced themselves. I said members' homepages text boxes might serve that purpose, but of course not everyone reads them and people say different things and reply in a discussion. I did not necessarily mean the discussion should be deleted, but was it?

No, not your fault. Martin deleted that discussion. last week - he deleted ALL discussions he had added, unfortunately.
